When Fashion Meets Formula 1

With a host of fabulous F1 parties and other fringe activities happening all over Singapore as we gear up for one of the nation’s most coveted events of the year. Dressing for two different occasions can be problematic especially when you will want to look stylish but comfortable for the day, and glam it up for the evening.

To prevent a sartorial crisis from happening, we’ve put together a few outfit ideas that are ideal for both race day and the podium lounge after-party so that you’re all set for the weekend.

Choosing the dress

When putting together a day-to-night outfit, it is important to think carefully about your base garment. If you opt for a jumpsuit or dress, it will be relatively easy to carry extra accessories for the night-time change, rather than toting around extra separates such as skirts, shirts and so on. While jumpsuits are great, a dress might actually be more comfortable for this event, especially if you will be watching from one of the outdoor venues. That being said, wearing an uber-tight clingy dress is not a smart move. Keep in mind that you will be faced with big crowds and lots of sunshine if you’re checking out the venue before nightfall. Thus, a light, airy ensemble might work best. But, don’t turn up in your floral summer maxi dress, because that certainly won’t earn looks of approval at any after-parties.

Apart from that, anything that screams “I’m posh” is what women love to wear at F1. And what perfectly represents this is metallic colours such as gold, silver and bronze. However, don’t look too “blinged out” that you may be mistaken for a walking jewellery advertisement or require others to wear sunnies just to look at you. Here are some great jumpsuits and dresses that we think are perfect and comfortable!

Footwear

As far as shoes go, opt for flats. Whether it’s stylish flat booties or chic sneakers, make sure they are comfortable. You’ll be doing quite a bit of walking especially if you aren’t parked within the F1 circuit area. Keep in mind you may also have to climb up steps to get to your seat in the bleacher section. If rain is in the forecast, you may want to wear closed-toe shoes. Unless you’ve got tickets in the main grandstand, please leave your flip flops at home and skip the heels!

While Formula 1 is known for its glitz and glamour, comfort is key. You may be tempted to wear heels, but we don’t recommend it. You will be walking a lot – up and down the stairs as well as from one zone to the other. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself.  Thus, do try out your shoes before wearing it on the day to avoid painful blisters. Don’t be afraid to mix a bit of casual with formal because it brings in a bit of edginess to your outfit!

Do note that F1 does not allow camera bags, coolers, backpacks, etc. This is not a Nascar event you can bring “gear” to. Bring something that is glam enough for the podium lounge but still practical. The international crowd keeps it light. We like crossbody messenger bags as they’re practical for fitting your items inside but is able to bring you from day to night while leaving your hands free. If you can’t fit your essentials such as cash, lipstick (or lip balm), phone and maybe a comb into a wrist wallet or a modest pochette, you better practice packing! Leave your giant Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada totes at home.

Be edgy, be colourful. Just because you need to dress comfortably doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. The women who attend Formula 1 races are from all over the world and are incredibly fashion conscious. They are classy, elegant and like to push the envelope when it comes to their wardrobe so take risks and dress to kill!
