It’s that time of the year where we sit down, gather our thoughts for the year and then start a list of our New Year Resolutions. Last year, we decided not to write down any resolutions and instead, wrote a list of things that we were grateful for. While we still stand by that, we know that as the year comes to a close, all of us will look back and remember the best and the worst of 2017 and look forward to what 2018 will bring.
Most of us will have a list of New Year Resolutions and here are some common resolutions that we all have made, one year or another, and we’re gonna help you achieve them – the best that we can.
Lose weight or exercise more
This is a resolution that is on the top of 90% people’s lists. However, most people often do not fulfil this resolution after the first few months, after the motivation runs out or lack of results due to concentrating only on cardio or strength training. It is important to do both, based on your body type, and to increase the intensity accordingly when you hit certain plateaus. Thus, it is important to know what sort of exercises are best suited for you and it is even better to get a regime tailored for you with some workout buddies or just a trainer.
To kickstart your fitness regime, our fitness expert, Joel Quek, is giving away one free Physical Training Session to our readers in Singapore from now till 31 Jan 2018. To claim your free session, please fill in the form here. Alternatively, check out some of the wellness events happening and join them regularly to find out what sort of exercises/sports you enjoy and can foresee yourself doing in the long term.
Linked to losing weight, the second most common New Year resolution is to eat healthier in the new year because weight loss or gain is pretty much linked to one’s diet. Much like with exercise, the secret to eating healthy is staying constant. Which is why we recommend starting out slow because if you quit your old dietary habits cold turkey, chances are you’ll just relapse not long after. Moreover, it takes at least 60 days for a new habit to be formed. Thus, we recommend making small but easy changes in your diet in order to see the best effects. For example, choose brown rice instead of white for lunch or dinner; use smaller plates to better control your portion sizes; plan your meals a day in advance so that you do not make unhealthy choices due to hunger since you’ve already planned what you’re going to eat.
Experts have told us the 80-20 rule where 80% of our diet determines how much weight we lose or gain while the remaining 20% goes to exercise. That said, it is the combination of both diet and exercise that produces the optimum results. Therefore, don’t just switch your dietary habits and ignore the exercise portion! This is exactly why we have teamed up with both Joel and our resident Wellness Coach, Chong Su Lee, to come up with a comprehensive 60-day Metabolic Tune Up Programme that teaches, coaches and motivates you to develop better eating and exercise habits. For those who would like to start off small, we are now having a 5-day trial programme where you can experience more energy and improve your health accordingly!
Have a Wardrobe Makeover
Do you face the problem of having too many clothes in your wardrobe but not knowing what to wear? Or, as they say, “clothes maketh a (wo)man” and wearing more flattering outfits or something that is slightly different from your usual T-shirt jeans for casual or black corporate wear will naturally make you feel more confident.
So don’t be afraid to go and try out a bunch of different outfits, see what fits you and what small changes you immediately like. If you are not sure how to go about it, why not sign up for a complimentary makeover session worth S$150* (terms and conditions apply) with miss:fi:t? From now till 31 March 2018, simply drop them an email at [email protected] and quote “THE WELLNESS INSIDER” to enjoy the makeover so that you can be more body confident and go out to find more clothes that you know will suit you! Out with the old and in with the new!
Spend More Time with Our Loved Ones
It does sound really cheesy, but in a year that showed us the importance of addressing depression and how communicating and showing your vulnerabilities can help, you never know how lending an ear to someone that needs it can help. So give yourself the gift of supporting someone else and making others’ lives better by simply spending more time with them.
A lot of people complain that they have ‘no time’ or that they’re too busy but we can get so hung up in our own lives and problems that we forget about those that support us, whether it’d be our family and friends. Similar to exercise and diet, spending quality time with loved ones is more important than the amount of time. Thus, make sure that when you are with your family and friends, keep them as the focus and enjoy the moments.
To be more sociable
It’s okay, we know life can be stressful. We also know that it’s easy to just get home, put on some comfortable clothing and roll yourself into bed to watch your favorite shows and movies, especially after a tough days. But going out is hugely beneficial for humans both physically and emotionally.
Interacting with others and spending time seeing sights and exploring the world helps remind us of the beauty that’s within our reach and to stay in tune with everyone. Plus, it’s always a good chance to meet new people as well. That is why there is an increasing number of wellness events popping up where you can fulfil two resolutions in one!
Try Different Things
One way to make going out more a common thing is by finding new hobbies to try out. It’s always important to reinvent oneself and experience new things, as they help you know yourself more and really set your life in a different direction.
It doesn’t have to be anything complex, it can be as simple as cycling or learning how to cook, maybe even learning how to make kombucha. The point is to give yourself a chance to learn a new skill that could help you improve your life.
